Summer Memories | My Boys

This is exactly the reason why I thought boys were gross when I was a little girl. Now I’m the proud mom of two of the gross-est. :)

These photos are from early summer when James and Colin would dig up worms in the backyard for their almost-daily fishing trips. My memory? Jim and James with their lines in the lake, Colin throwing rocks in the water and scaring all the fish away while I was taking photos of the water, the bobber, my boys, the fish they caught, the clouds, (the worms they used as bait!) etc. etc. etc.

My Salsa Garden

Every summer since 2008 I’ve started a garden. I write “start” because in 2008 and 2009 the garden never made it much further than the initial putting seeds into the ground. For a number of excuses (Colin was a toddler and kept picking my tomatos before they were ripe, too busy to pull out the weeds, whoops–forgot to water it AGAIN, etc. etc. etc.) my ”gardening” attempts always ended as a bunch of weeds and dried up plants. I made it a goal this year to give my green thumb one more chance to prove itself. I shouldn’t speak too soon (afterall, my only harvest as of today has been one cherry bomb pepper and a handful of dill), but I think 2010 is going to be my year.

As a HUGE fan of pico de gallo, I planted mostly everything I needed to make it. For anyone interested:

Pico de Gallo:

4-6 tomatos
1/2 onion (red or yellow)
1/4-1/2 bunch cilantro
jalapeno (however much you can handle)
fresh lime juice
salt and other spices (I found a packet of salsa seasoning at the grocery store)

I’m starting to get the feeling that within the next couple of weeks I’m going to have WAY more tomatos than even I can eat (I have six different varieties of THRIVING tomato plants).

Weekend In South Dakota | Jim & A Haystack

We road tripped it to South Dakota this past weekend (Mt. Rushmore!) on a VERY last minute whim. On our way back to Colorado we spotted a field of hay bales which looked like a fun spot to stop and take some photos.

**There is NO PHOTOSHOP trickery involved here–I PROMISE! Trickery, perhaps, but not photoshop or any other form of post-processing. This is ONE exposure my friends. :)

**Not gonna lie and pretend like I came up with this concept. This photo is 100% inspired by photographer Rodney Smith, whose work I came to love while I was a graduate student working as an intern at the BYU Museum of Art (the BYU MOA featured his photographs in an exhibition in 2005–I was in the design department and helped produce the gallery guide).

James is 5…!

…pretty sure I was the only one with my back to the circus taking photos of my kids’ expressions. Colin’s enthusiasm was just too priceless to ignore.
